Make Brilliance Your Benchmark
June 8th, 2009
About this time last year I was starting to seriously plan starting up on my own. At that stage Design Jones had a different name but the vision has remained the same and looking back through my old journals I’m really encouraged by all we’ve achieved so far. I also see there are some things I need to remember and stick to more firmly.
I stumbled upon some notes I made on a article in Computer Arts, The Freelance Issue. Here are some of the highlights from my notes:
• Designers are most often found by word of mouth. If your work is good enough and you get it out there you will be noticed!
• Work on personal projects. Set aside time for research and inspiration.
• Happy clients are repeat clients. Always meet the brief but give them something extra.
• Don’t say yes to everything! Sometimes you are not the right person for the job. You might be too busy, unable to do the project justice or it may be outside your skillset.
• Never work for free or a ‘reduced rate’
And finally, When you’re passionate about something you’ll overcome any obstacles to make it happen. Make ‘BRILLIANCE’ your benchmark!
